Report: Niners Coach Kyle Shanahan Might Make a Quarterback Change If Team Starts Out 0-2

The Trey Lance era already coming to an end?

The Tray Lance era got off to a bumpy start as the San Francisco 49ers’ starting quarterback lost  to the Chicago Bears in week 1 of the NFL season. A new report is now suggesting that the Niners current QB1 doesn’t have much rope left, and if he doesn’t bounce back in week 2, he’s going to  be replaced with Jimmy G.  The 49ers face the Seattle Seahawks in Week 2, and Lance is going to be feeling the pressure.  According to Jason La Canfora of the Washington Post, people who know and have worked with Niners coach Kyle Shanahan believe he will make a quarterback change if the team starts 0-2.

“This team thinks it has Super Bowl potential, and the internal hope was that games against the rebuilding Bears and Seahawks might help provide a soft opening. Gulp. If the 49ers open 0-2, people who have worked with and for Kyle Shanahan anticipate that Garoppolo will be starting by Week 3′s Sunday night meeting with a strong Broncos defense.”

We knew this would become a thing the minute the Niners decided to keep Jimmy G for another season.  It was a bad move in many ways, but mostly for Trey Lance’s growth. Had Jimmy been off the team, Lance could have taken his time to get acclimated, and now he has to win now. The second-year quarterback went 13/28 for 164 yards with no touchdowns and an interception against the Bears in Week 1, but  in his defense it was a bizarre weather game, making the field conditions pretty awful.

Shanahan will do whatever is necessary to win games now, and if that means putting Jimmy G back in, so be it.

It will suck to be Trey Lance if the Niners start out 0-2.
