Report: Los Angeles Rams Were Team ‘Lurking’ For Jimmy Garoppolo if 49ers Released Him

Here’s a surprise team no one expected to be tied to Jimmy G.

If the San Francisco 49ers and Jimmy Garoppolo would have been unable to agree to a restructured contract this summer, plenty of teams were waiting for him to be released. One surprising team has emerged as a potential suitor for Jimmy G’s services. A Super Bowl winner from last season, and a bonafide contender this season were “lurking” as a possible destination for the veteran quarterback.

That surprise team was the Los Angeles Rams, who would have welcomed a veteran backup to protect Matthew Stafford. Adam Schefter reported that “Garoppolo and the Rams had the makings of a deal if he was released by the Niners,” adding that the 49ers had no idea the Rams were looking into signing Garoppolo.

Via ESPN:

“It was going to be such a Rams move to make,” a member of the 49ers organization told Schefter. “Sean McVay and Kevin Demoff would have been basking in it.”

Following Garoppolo agreeing to a restructured contract to stay in San Francisco, the 49ers learned that the Los Angeles Rams were a possible destination for the veteran quarterback had he been released. Garoppolo would have signed as a top-tier backup to Rams QB Matthew Stafford, who was limited with an elbow injury during training camp. Clearly this indicates Matthew Stafford’s injury may be more serious than we thought.

Last season Jimmy Garoppolo appeared in 15 games for the 49ers and completed 68.3 percent of his passes for 3,810 yards, 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.  Jimmy G also rushed for 51 yards and three touchdowns.

The Niners are probably happy they have Jimmy G right about now, especially with the Trey Lance Era already off to a rocky start.
