Mike McCarthy Caught Making Telling Comment On Ezekiel Elliott On “Hard Knocks”

Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy has been front and center during the HBO’s popular “Hard Knocks” Training Camp documentary. And one of the biggest storylines of McCarthy’s camp is centered around running back Ezekiel Elliott.

In 2020, Elliott had a down year, and has been steadily declining throughout his career.

When “Hard Knocks” cameras were catching a conversation between Mike McCarthy and Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones, he had some interesting things to say about Ezekiel Elliott.

“I don’t even think we should run him this whole camp,” McCarthy told Jones, via The Athletic. “He’s up there in carries career-wise. He’s in much better shape this year than last year.”

It’s a good sign for Cowboys fans that Mike McCarthy is noticing a much more in-shape Ezekiel Elliott because last season looked like it could have been the beginning of the end for the dynamic running back.

Elliott credited a new offseason diet and workout regime for his noticeably better physique.

“Cleaned up the diet a little bit, little bit different training — definitely made an emphasis to get lighter coming into the season,” Elliott told Fox Sports’ Erin Andrews amid last week’s Hall of Fame Game.

Along with clearly losing a step, Elliott has developed a bit of an issue securing the ball. Last season, Elliott tied a career-high with six fumbles even playing in much less games.

If Mike McCarthy’s Cowboys want to reach their goals this season, they’re going to need the backfield of Ezekiel Elliott and Dak Prescott to be clicking.
