Jimmy Garoppolo is Returning for At Least One More Year with the San Francisco 49ers

The Jimmy G Era in San Fran isn’t over just yet.

One of the more interesting quarterback sagas in recent NFL memory just got another year of drama added to it. Jimmy Garoppolo is staying in San Francisco for at least another year with the San Francisco 49ers after all. Garoppolo agreed to a new deal with the Niners right before the deadline for teams to submit their 53 man rosters. He is set to be Trey Lance’s backup, at least that’s the game plan heading into the season. Garoppolo reworked his contract so he will receive $7 million guaranteed, plus a no-trade, no-tag clause and an additional $9 million if he actually plays, according to an ESPN report on Monday.

“Comp update: Jimmy Garoppolo’s one-year restructured deal is worth $6.5 million in base, fully guaranteed, per sources. He has another total of $500k in roster bonuses. He also has playtime bonuses that can boost it another nearly $9M. So, one year, $7M, up to just shy of $16M.”

Garoppolo will end up “most likely somewhere else,” Shanahan said back in July. The head coach spoke about Garoppolo fully in the past tense.

“Had an awesome run with Jimmy, and it was great,” Shanahan said on Tim Kawakami’s podcast. “We have moved on to Trey,” he added. “We think Jimmy would have been traded if the surgery didn’t happen.”

It’s pretty crazy that the team went out of its way to make Trey Lance their guy by trying to get themselves rid of Garoppolo, only to bring him back after all the hoopla. But Shanahan and John Lynch didn’t have much choice, they obviously didn’t want to see Garoppolo thriving elsewhere.
