With COVID-19 vaccinations slowly being distributed around the world, many current and former athletes have shared their plan to take the vaccine when available. NBA commissioner Adam Silver even floated the idea of publicly showing players getting the vaccine to help spread awareness.
“It’s something we’re particularly focused on,” Silver said in a virtual conference hosted by Sportico. “In the African American community, there’s been an enormously disparate impact from COVID. …But now, somewhat perversely, there’s been enormous resistance [to vaccinations] in the African American community for understandable historical reasons”
Unfortunately for Silver, the NBA’s most influential player, LeBron James, wants no part in helping spread awareness for getting the vaccine. In a press conference prior to the All-Star game, LeBron revealed that he’d like to keep his COVID vaccine decision private.
“That’s a conversation that my family and I will have,” LeBron James said. “Keep that to a private thing.”

I’m kind of shocked by this. I would see LeBron James as a guy who would use his platform to try to help get people to see that there is nothing threatening about the vaccine. With that being said, it’s important to respect LeBron’s decision. If he doesn’t feel well-informed enough to make a public statement with the vaccine, then so be it.
