During the NFL owners meetings this week, Colts owner Jim Irsay has made it clear that there was no scenario where he was signing off on keeping Carson Wentz for another season.
When speaking earlier in the week, Irsay threw some no-so-subtle shade at Wentz after his one season under center in Indy.
“It’s just, for us, it was just it was something that we had to move away from as a franchise — it was very obvious,” Irsay said.

In separate comments, Jim Irsay made it clear that he was disgusted with the team losing to the lowly Jaguars with a playoff berth on the line during the last game of the season.
“No disrespect to Jacksonville, but I mean, they’re the worst team in the league,” Irsay said of the Jaguars, who for the second straight year own the No. 1 overall pick in the draft. “I mean, if you play well for the first quarter, you know, they’re (probably) looking to go to the locker room, you know?
“I can’t emphasize how shocked and disappointed (I was),” Irsay continued. “I don’t have the words to describe the level of that letdown … I mean, I’ve never seen it in my life.”

We talk all the time about how one game doesn’t define a man’s career. But the more we hear about the decision for Jim Irsay and the Colts moving off Carson Wentz, the more it’s likely that the one singular loss to the Jaguars was the straw that broke the camel’s back.
Wentz had developed a strong rapport with Colts head coach Frank Reich during their time together in Philly. And even after the trade to the Commanders, Reich remained confident in Wentz’s talents.
The decision to replace Carson Wentz with Matt Ryan sure feels like it came from the top… with Jim Irsay deciding enough was enough.
