Baker Mayfield Reportedly Had a Very Rough Practice After Being Named Panthers Starter Over Sam Darnold

Baker Mayfield may now be the official starting quarterback of the Carolina Panthers, but he still has a lot of work to do before seeing success on the football field again.

After being named QB1 this morning, reports were circulating that he had one of his worst Training Camp practices to date for Carolina.

“Baker Mayfield pick-6 by Jaycee Horn. Rough day for Panthers starter,” Panthers reporter David Newton tweeted out earlier today.

While naming Baker Mayfield the starter, Panthers coach Matt Rhule praised how his QB was growing in the new system.

“When we started this process, we were looking at three things,” Panthers head coach Matt Rhule said, via the team website. “No. 1, mastery of the offense, No. 2, situational football excellence, and No. 3, moving the ball and getting guys involved. That’s been our focus all along.

“Baker has made a lot of improvement, a lot of growth in all three areas in a short amount of time.”

Even though he’s currently struggling a bit to find his footing, Mayfield maintains that he’s growing in Carolina both as a leader and football player.

“I’ve said it before, the locker room and the organization is going to go as the QB room goes, and as long as we’re leading correctly and we’re supporting each other, good things are going to happen,” Mayfield said. “So we’re not worried about when that’s going to happen, just trying to get better each day.”

Despite acknowledging that Cleveland gave up on him, Baker Mayfield has not lost confidence in himself as a football player, and he has the full belief that he’ll excel in his second opportunity to lead an offense.

“It’s not a redemption year,” he said. “I know what I’m capable of. I’m not trying to prove anything to anybody else. I’m just trying to lead this locker room the best I can and win a bunch of ball games.”
