Is The Washington Football Team Actually Keeping The Name?

The Washington Football Team was meant to be a filler until the organization could come up with a better name, right? Maybe not. After finally switching the name from the Washington Redskins, it looks like Washington might keep their interim name for the long term.

Washington President Jason Wright spoke on the likelihood of Washington keeping its name. He spoke with ESPN’s John Keim.

“It’s definitely in the running,” Wright said of The Washington Football Team name. “I don’t think anything is off the table. … With this one, people are excited about the idea of a club has an identity rooted solely in the area it represents. Maybe it’s Football Team or it’s Football Club. We need to get underneath the why, so no matter what direction we go, we can pull on the heartstrings of folks.”

“The last thing our fan base wants is something messy and embarrassing,” he added.

I mean, come on. Jason Wright can’t be seriously here. You mean to tell me that the most creative name they can come with is The Washington Football Team? It has been hard enough for me to refer to that team name for this year. You can’t even really make a nickname out of that. Just terrible.

I also found it slightly amusing that Jason Wright added that he doesn’t want anything ‘messy or embarrassing’. Well, obviously. It is possible to make a name not offensive but also not “The Washington Football Team”. Someone has to realize this.

Figure it out, Washington.
