Actor JF Davis Talks Sports During the Pandemic

Actor JF Davis has had quite a storied career, appearing on shows such as The West Wing, Greys Anatomy, Private Practice, Code Black, The Pretender, The Mentalist, 13 Reasons Why, Station 19, Criminal Minds, S.W.A.T. and Ratched,  but no matter how many shows or movies you have been in, nobody could quite predict a storyline like COVID-19 has thrown us all for.
Luckily, JF like the rest of us still have sports to watch, even though JF’s teams in Boston haven’t been so hot lately. The actor speaks to us exclusievly about that, his dreams of being a race car driver, and if he is starting to become a Los Angeles sports fan now that he lives there…
1. Growing up as a Celtics, Patriots and Red Sox fan, are you confident with the state of Boston sports right now?

I have to say that as a Boston fan we have had some ups and downs but they always seem to find their way back. I am very confident with the Celtics right now. This year did not have the ending one would hope for but this has been a crazy year. I feel we have the right coach, a great GM and some amazing talent. The Red sox are always competing, they will be in the mix and then there is the Pats. I have to say I am a huge Brady fan and think that it was a mistake letting him go instead of finding him some receivers, but that being said, with Belichik and a very well run organization, they will be back on track in a year or two.
2. Who is going to win a championship next out of those three teams?

I tell you, even as a fan that is a tough one. The west is so strong right now in the NBA, there are so many talented football teams and in baseball it is always a toss-up. But if I had to guess, I would have to say that the Celtics will be the next Boston team to go to the finals but the sox will be the next to win it all.

3. Since you live in Hollywood now, do you have any love for your new hometown teams?

Actually, I do. I have two sons and we play a lot of basketball so when they were young, we started going to Clipper games because as a Celtics fan, the Lakers were out of the question. So, we became Clipper fans, and are still big Clipper fans. Really looking forward to this season as we finally got rid of Doc, great guy but never was happy with his coaching. he is very predictable and it seems that good coaches out coach him in the second half of games when they are important. I have also really fallen in love with Justin Herbet and the LA Chargers. I think he will be the next star in the NFL. Watch the kid play, he is amazing, I have never seen such a talented and poised QB in his rookie season.
4. Being an actor, you get to play various roles. What sporting roles were your favorite so far?

I wish that I had more sports related roles. I would love to have played a boxer and I almost had an opportunity to play a football player in “The Replacements”, my buddy wrote the film and had me in mind for a role, but it was early in my career and once Gene Hackman signed on, he could not get me in. But I have played a race car driver on the TV show Arliss which was pretty cool. When I was young, I raced stock cars and thought that would be my career, but soon realized that it took more money to compete than what I had.
5. What is your process in “getting into character” for a role?

To be honest I don’t really have a process. I do my research if I am not familiar with the characters occupation, and I really familiarize myself with the script. Other than that, I just do what comes naturally, I try not to over think it and most of all try not to act! Like the Nike ad says, just do it!
6. If you weren’t acting, would you be racing stock cars again like in your past?

To be honest, there was a time in my life when I thought that I would be racing professionally, that was my childhood dream. But dreams change and people change. As for acting, it is all I want to do now, once I started acting, I knew I would do it for the rest of my life. I may try producing and directing, but just to further my acting career.

7. What upcoming projects can we see you in?

I have a little action film coming out soon called “Outrage”, I play Mike, a good ole boy from Texas whose daughter is kidnapped by a gang of drug dealing bikers. I call on the help of a couple of friends to help me get my daughter back. I also have a Western coming out early next year called “Showdown on the Brazos”, in that I play a preacher who just happens to carry a gun! I also have a Horror film’ “The Demons Within” that I will be directing and starring in as well as a few other projects in the works. 2021 should be a good year for me!
8. Anything else sports related you’d like to add?

I am enjoying the football season; I think that it is really up in the air this year. The playoffs should be some of the most interesting that we have had in years, I don’t really see an outright powerhouse in the NFL this year. Even though the Stealers are undefeated at this time, they just don’t seem like a super bowl team to me. I really don’t know who will be there this year, it’s going to be interesting. Now for the NBA, I am looking for big things out of the Clippers out West, and I really am rooting for the Celtics in the east, but the way they have brought in help for Yannis, the Bucks are going to be tough and the heat should only get better. Also, I can’t wait for things to get back to normal so I can get into a gym and play some hoops myself, that’s what I miss the most during the pandemic.
Thanks to JF for taking the time to talk sports.
