Who Will The Colts Turn To At QB?

The Indianapolis Colts are in an interesting spot. They have a great team, some might say a Super Bowl ready team. They just don’t have the quarterback. After Philip Rivers announced today that he would be retiring, the question of who will be under center for Indy next season has begun.

The Colts were in the same situation last offseason, and turned to Rivers. It didn’t really work. The guy had a phenomenal career, but he’s old and somewhat washed up. Even with Rivers’ shortcomings, the team was in a position to beat the Buffalo Bills in their playoff game. Can you imagine if they get an upgrade at the QB position? Let’s take a look at the options.

Matthew Stafford would appear to be a candidate for a trade. The Lions quarterback has been stuck in mediocrity with a lackluster organization for many years now, and he might want to push the envelope to try to make a run at a championship.

What about Carson Wentz? He was benched in favor of Jalen Hurts late in the season, and should still have some upside. He has proven he can be a starting QB in the league. However, after the Eagles fired Doug Pederson, it appears the organization will move forward with Wentz as their quarterback.

Sam Darnold could be another option for the Colts. Darnold has all the talent in the world, but has not panned out in New York. With the Jets holding the #2 overall pick in the draft, many are speculating that they’ll pick a QB and move on from Darnold. Maybe playing behind the Colts’ elite offensive line would bring out the best in Darnold.

There are other veteran names the Colts could turn to. Cam Newton, Jimmy Garoppolo, Matt Ryan, Ryan Fitzpatrick, etc.  would hold the position over for the Colts to take a young QB in the draft and let him develop.

There are many names out there for the Colts to choose from. If I’m a free agent quarterback, I’m looking at the Colts as the best situation possible for me. It’ll be interesting to see which direction Indy goes after Rivers will no longer be their guy.
