Detroit Lions Had A Wild First Request When The Rams Called About Matthew Stafford

The Detroit Lions and Los Angeles Rams were able to complete their trade centered around quarterback Matthew Stafford. The Rams ended up sending their first round picks in 2022 and 2023, a third round pick in 2021 and Jared Goff for the veteran Stafford.

While that is a HAUL for a veteran quarterback, the Lions were hoping for something else. When talks between the Rams and Lions began, Detroit actually asked for DPOY Aaron Donald in return.

According to ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter, “When trade talks began between the Rams and Lions, the first player Detroit requested in a trade for QB Matthew Stafford was DT Aaron Donald, per sources. Rams told Lions, that’s not happening, before the two sides later figured out the eventual compensation package.”

Aaron Donald is widely considered one of the best defensive players in the NFL. He’s also in the prime of his career. I’m a little surprised that the rebuilding Lions would ask about Donald, but he’ll likely remain a stud for the foreseeable future.

The Lions had to know that the chances were slim that L.A. would be willing to part ways with Aaron Donald. Worth a shot, though.
