New England Patriots legend Tedy Bruschi still gets very defensive when talking about his former team. That was evident today.
Bruschi had a problem with the report that Matthew Stafford would have accepted a trade “anywhere but New England”. Tedy Bruschi went on Ordway, Merloni & Fauria on WEEI and let Stafford have it.
“He’s not tough enough to play here. He’s just not tough enough. I don’t think he’s tough enough to be coached hard. I mean, do you realize the mental toughness that Tom Brady had to have for 20 years to deal with Bill Belichick and that type of coaching? I mean, constant pressure every single day. Does Stafford sort of grab you as a guy who could handle that? I just don’t think so. So he went Sean McVay and get his little best friend relationship and have fun over there. That’s fine.”

Honestly though, you could blast Matthew Stafford for a lot of things–toughness not being one of them. Stafford has consistently played through injuries, even when his team sucks. In fact, he has a reputation to be one of the toughest dudes in the entire league.
It might be time to retire the whole notion that the Patriots organization does things differently, and if you can’t handle “tough love” don’t come to New England. That whole narrative was cool when they were winning, but life after Tom Brady has exposed the Patriots as just another team. The “Patriots way” does not reign supreme in the NFL anymore.
I respect the loyalty Tedy Bruschi has to his former team, though.
