Now That Carson Wentz Is Off The Table…What Will The Chicago Bears Do?

The market for Carson Wentz appeared to come down to two teams — the Indianapolis Colts and the Chicago Bears. The Colts ended up getting Wentz, but it turns out that the Bears might not have even been that interested, after all.

The Chicago Bears never made an offer to the Philadelphia Eagles for Carson Wentz, per @JayGlazer.

While most fans in Chicago are happy that Carson Wentz will not be their QB next season, it begs the question…who will be? While many teams are in need of a QB1, the market is starting to thin out.

Obviously, the biggest prize is Deshaun Watson. Right now, the Texans are standing firm that they ave no plans to trade Deshaun, but if he continues to ask for a trade, they’ll have no choice. Regardless, the Bears are a long shot to land Watson. They’re also bound to be impatient, meaning they won’t wait around for Houston to decide when/if they’ll take calls about their star quarterback. So, who’s left for the Chicago Bears? Let’s take a look at the options.

1. Derek Carr

It is not a sure thing that the Raiders will move Derek Carr in the offseason, but it appears that it is heading that way. Carr has shown he has the talent to be a decent quarterback in the NFL, but he’s not really a fit in Jon Gruden’s system. If Vegas gets a great offer for Carr, they’d likely move him. The Bears might be the team to make that offer.

2. Jimmy Garoppolo

Jimmy G grew up in Illinois, so maybe a homecoming is in the works? Sure, this wouldn’t be the flashiest move for the Bears (not that many moves would be) but he could probably execute Matt Nagy’s offense better than Mitchell Trubisky did. Garoppolo has an injury problem, and Kyle Shanahan seems set on moving on from him this offseason.

3. Sam Darnold

I’m not really sure if the Bears are looking for a project, but Darnold might just be the best option. Darnold has the talent, but has not put it all together for a janky New York Jets organization. A change of scenery is most likely in the works for Darnold, and maybe he’ll land in another big city. Chicago would offer Darnold the chance to play with an elite defense, and a new scheme. Maybe he could turn his career around in the windy city. He’s still just 23-years-old.

4. Marcus Mariota

Marcus Mariota might just be the biggest wild card on the quarterback market. he was drafted second overall by the Titans in the 2015 NFL Draft. It didn’t work out. After an up-and-down 3.5 seasons under center, the Titans turned to Ryan Tannehill, who has done great for them. Mariota was the backup to Derek Carr in Las Vegas last year, but is bound to get another shot at being a starting quarterback in the NFL. Maybe Chicago offers him that opportunity?

5. Just wait for the Draft

This probably isn’t what the Bears were hoping for, but it might be their best course of action. If you take Deshaun Watson out of the picture, the available quarterbacks on the trade market just aren’t very exciting. The Bears have the 20th overall pick in the draft, which means they could probably take a guy like Mac Jones. Bears GM Ryan Pace has also shown a tendency to trade up in the draft. Maybe he makes a move up to draft Mitchell Trubisky’s successor.

Chicago Bears fans might be happy that the team didn’t trade for Carson Wentz, but the other options out there may be equally as disappointing. One thing is for sure, the Bears will not bring back Trubisky. It’s just a matter of who will take over under center.
