Drew Brees Expected To Retire After The Season

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees has had one hell of a run, and it appears that it’s coming to an end. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, it is widely expected that the 41-year old Brees will step away from the NFL at the end of this season.

While Brees is still playing at a relatively high level, he clearly is not the same threat that he was in years past. On some throws, Drew Brees’s age shows, and he struggles to move the ball deep down field. However, Brees has found a way to compensate for his inability to throw the deep ball. Brees has thrown for 2,741 yards and has 21 touchdowns this season. He also missed four games due to injury.

The Saints will have a real shot to make a run in Brees’s last year. They’re currently 11-4, and have already clinched a spot in the playoffs. The only thing left for the Saints to figure out is their seeding. They could be anywhere from the #1 to #3 seed based on what happens in today’s games.

If Brees does, in fact, retire, New Orleans will have a tough decision to make. They could choose their next quarterback in-house, and that would lead to a competition between Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill. They could obviously elect to find a QB on the free agent market, or in the draft, but it seems like there will be slim pickins this offseason.

Drew Brees will go down as one of the best to ever do it, we’ll see if he can ride off into the sunset with another Super Bowl Trophy.
