Matthew Stafford Injury: Sean McVay Makes Definitive Statement After Troubling Story Surfaces About Quarterback’s Elbow

Do the Los Angeles Rams have an issue on their hands with Matthew Stafford’s elbow?

The quarterback has sat out for all of the preseason action with an elbow injury that occurred during the 2021 season. And on Saturday, a report surfaced that the issue might linger for the entire year.

Per ESPN’s Dan Graziano:

“Don’t be surprised if
Matthew Stafford’s elbow is an issue all season.

What I’m hearing: Well, everything you hear from the Rams and from Stafford is that it’s fine, it’s nothing to worry about, they have a plan, and it won’t be a problem. And hey, maybe they’re telling the truth. The Rams’ medical staff is outstanding, and its plan for getting Stafford ready for the season may be perfect. But it’s the elbow on the starting quarterback’s throwing arm. The level of precision required to succeed at that position in the NFL is so high that even the slightest problem — one that affects the placement of the throw by 2 or 3 inches — could be enough to turn a great year into a so-so year.

My impression of this situation is that it affects Stafford’s practice schedule all year and could also, obviously, affect his performance on Sundays. He’s tough enough that it’s fair to believe it won’t affect his availability for Sundays, but this is a guy who already led the league in interceptions last year. We sure an elbow problem isn’t going to mess with him at all?”

When asked about Matthew Stafford’s elbow on Sunday afternoon, Rams head coach Sean McVay re-assured fans that the QB will be fine for the regular season opener against the Bills.

“He’ll be ready to go,” McVay said before adding that Stafford will have “no limitations”.

Matthew Stafford shared the sentiment that his elbow will hold up just fine when asked earlier in the offseason.

“I feel pretty good,” Stafford said after the joint practice against the Bengals via Fox Sports. “I feel like I can make all the throws. It’s just getting into a rhythm, just the actual, technical aspect of playing the position.”
