The Maquette University men’s basketball team took action tonight after a Wisconsin prosecutor declined to file charges against the police officer who shot Jacob Blake. Marquette announced that they would be wearing black to support Blake and his family. Marquette is in Milwaukee, which is about an hour from Kenosha, where the Jacob Blake shooting took place.

“We are extremely disappointed in the decision involving Jacob’s shooting and we will continue to use our platform to advocate and fight for racial justice,” the program said in a statement. “This is another reminder that just because racial and social injustice hasn’t received as much attention recently, doesn’t mean the need to fight against it has gone away.”
The Jacob Blake shooting occurred on Aug.23, 2020, and resulted in protests across all of professional sports. Blake was left paralyzed from the incident. Shortly after the Jacob Blake shooting, the Milwaukee Bucks decided to postpone their playoff game.
We’ll see what this ruling leads to. Athletes are bound to engage in peaceful protest, as we remain heavily divided as a country.
Kudos to the Marquette basketball team for standing up for what they believe in. I wouldn’t be surprised to see other teams follow their lead.
