Julio Jones is Injured Again, And This Time It Could Be Severe

Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones is ruled out against the Los Angeles Chargers with his lingering hamstring injury. But the situation is much more dire than missing a game.

Interim head coach Raheem Morris announced the team will discuss shutting down the five-time All-Pro receiver for the rest of the season.

While not mathematically eliminated from the playoffs, the 4-8 Atlanta Falcons’ season is all but over with four weeks to go. This will be the third straight season Atlanta has missed the playoffs, four years removed from their Super Bowl appearance.

This will be the fourth game Julio Jones misses this season. If he fails to play another game this year, it will be the first time he misses the 1,000 yard mark since 2013 when he played just five games. On top of it all, the seven-time Pro Bowler turns 32 before next season.

With injuries and age setting its toll, the steep drop off is alarming for skill position players. AJ Green went to seven consecutive Pro Bowls before suffering and recovering from a torn ligament in his ankle. He has just 357 yards and a touchdown during his age-32 season fully recovered from his injury.

TY Hilton is another example of a 32-year old receiver losing a step. Its the first time he’s averaging under 50 yards a game with a career low in touchdowns. Julio Jones might be the next unfortunate casualty of Father Time.

Just like former All-Pro Roddy White passed the torch to Julio Jones, now Jones will soon pass the torch to Calvin Ridley as the bonafide No. 1 receiver for the Atlanta Falcons. It’s unfortunate that Atlanta could never deliver Jones more success outside of their lone Super Bowl appearance.
