Cam Newton Tries to Persuade Fans The Best Has Yet To Come

New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton believes he hasn’t hit his potential this season, amid a disappointing 2020 comeback campaign for coach Bill Belichick

“Honestly, I think what drives me is knowing that I have yet to play my best football,” said Newton. “This game, I have always said it, it comes down to reacting. And when that play is called, when Josh [McDaniels] gives the play call, that 40 seconds that you have to call the play, it really comes down to how do you react faster than the defense to executing. Have I done it consistently? Not to my liking, but I am getting there. It’s just a learning curve.”

New England Patriots fans are just hoping he’s right.

It has been a turbulent season for the Patriots after the departure of Tom Brady. Cam Newton is averaging under 200 yards passing per game for the first time in his career. He has four passing touchdowns through 10 games against nine interceptions, for a passer rating of 79.8, the second lowest of his career.

Newton does have nearly 400 yards rushing and nine touchdowns on the ground. His touchdown tally is just four behind the league leader, Vikings running back Dalvin Cook.

Despite the tumultuous campaign, Bill Belichick’s Patriots are still in the mix for a playoff spot. Last week’s win against the upstart Cardinals is the perfect example of their season, where Belichick’s creative schemes and situational defense clutched out a 20-17 win even with Newton’s 23.6 passer rating.

At 5-6 (5-5 with Newton), the New England Patriots are out of the running for a top quarterback prospect in the upcoming draft. Cam Newton is only on the books for this season, leaving open a lot of possibilities for Bill Belichick and his squad’s future. They trail Brady’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers by a game and a half.

Cam’s future after this season might develop into an off-down quarterback role, a system New Orleans developed with Taysom Hill. Jacoby Brissett and Jalen Hurts fill a similar role with their franchises. If Newton continues his mediocre play to finish the season, it might be his last as a starter. But there is still some value as he is a premier goal line threat.

The final five games will determine a lot about the future of the franchise and Cam Newton.
