Baker Mayfield’s tenure in Cleveland just got a little bit worse.
The downfall of their relationship started when the Browns decided to pursue Deshaun Watson. The Browns chose to head a different direction after Mayfield struggled all season long. Mayfield requested a trade following the Browns pursuit of Watson. The Browns pretty much said that’s not happening. The Browns eventually signed Watson on a five-year, $230 million deal . Mayfield did not show up to April’s voluntary workouts.
As Mayfield continues to see where he’ll end up next, now there’s a report that appears to come from Baker’s people. ESPN reports that sources close to Mayfield questioned the Browns play calling at the end of the season and wondered at the time if the organization set the quarterback up to “look as hapless as possible in prime time” to prove why they would need a change in the offseason.
“According to multiple sources, those close to Mayfield — who to that point had missed one game because of his shoulder injury — wondered at the time if the Browns were trying to make Mayfield look as hapless as possible in prime time, to potentially pave the way for the franchise to more easily explain why it might be moving on from him in the offseason.”

The game in question was the Week 17 Monday Night Football game between the Browns and Steelers. Cleveland was already eliminated from the playoffs.
During the game, he was sacked nine times, and his last play resulted in an interception. He even threw 10 incompletions in a row at one point during the 26–14 loss to the Steelers. Following the game Mayfield spoke out about Kevin Stefanski’s game plan that night.

Mayfield was recently linked to Seattle or Carolina, but both those teams have made moves that likely shut down that happening. And these latest accusations of sabotage isn’t going to help him land another job anytime soon. Bold strategy by Baker’s camp, we’ll see if it pays off.
