Trey Lance On Being Drafted By The 49ers: ‘That’s The Plan’

When the San Francisco 49ers traded with the Miami Dolphins to acquire the #3 pick in Thursday’s NFL Draft, many thought they might be eyeing Ohio State QB Justin Fields. It’s starting to look more and more likely that we thought wrong.

According to reports, Kyle Shanahan and the Niners are more interested in Mac Jones, or maybe even Trey Lance with the pick.

Lance went on SB Nation’s “Niners Nation” podcast, and when wrapping up the interview, he had some revealing things to say about the potential of going to the Niners. As the interview was ending, the Niners Nation bloggers said, “hopefully” he ends up in a Niners jersey, and that they hope to be talking again after the draft on Thursday.

Lance responded by laughing and saying, “that’s the plan.”

Did Trey Lance just hint that he’s been told something by the 49ers?

I’m gonna say probably not. I think the ‘that’s the plan’ was just his way of finding whatever cliche came to mind for the moment. He probably didn’t choose the right language, but I don’t think that necessarily means anything about his chances to be playing in San Fran.

Who knows, though? Maybe Kyle Shanahan really did tell Trey Lance that the plan is that he’ll be taken with the #3 overall pick. We’ll all just have to wait and see.
