The Celtics decided to play their game against the Miami Heat tonight, but they very nearly opted against playing to protest the ruling in the Jacob Blake case. The team was also upset with the drastic difference in how MAGA protestors were treated today compared to how BLM protestors were treated.
Blake was shot by police in Kenosha, Wisconsin, and was left paralyzed. It was announced yesterday that the police officer who shot Jacob Blake would not face charges.
Celtics players were engaged in a players-only meeting within the last 45 minutes in Miami locker room, source tells ESPN. https://t.co/JTBEk6qHiu

Team intends to release a statement before returning to the floor. But the plan is to play, I'm told.

The Celtics and Heat game did start on time, but the team’s joined forces in releasing this statement on everything going on in the country today.
“2021 is a new year, but some things have not changed. We play tonight’s game with a heavy heart after yesterday’s decision in Kenosha, and knowing that protesters in our nation’s capital are treated differently by political leaders depending on what side of certain issues they are on. The drastic difference between the way protesters this past spring and summer were treated and the encouragement given to today’s protestors who acted illegally just shows how much more work we have to do.
“We have decided to play tonight’s game to try to bring joy into people’s lives. But we must not forget the injustices in our society, and we will continue to use our voices and our platform to highlight these issues and do everything we can to work for a more equal and just America,” the Statement read.
