Texas Has Already Picked Their Guy After Firing Tom Herman (It’s Not Urban Meyer)

The Texas Longhorns made a shocking decision this morning to fire head football coach Tom Herman.

This comes just weeks after Texas AD Chris Del Conte stood by Herman as the coach of the Longhorns.

“There has been a lot of speculation about the future of our football coach,” Del Conte said in a statement on Dec. 12 via USA Today. “My policy is to wait until the end of the season before evaluating and commenting on our program and coaches.

“With the close of the regular season, I want to reiterate that Tom Herman is our coach,” Del Conte added.

For Del Conte to go back on his word means that he must have had a change of heart. Either that, or someone became available who was too good to pass up.

That “someone” appears to be Alabama offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian

Sideaction’s Latest:

The last time we saw Steve Sarkisian lead a program, things got ugly. Sark went from Washington to USC, where he was 12-6 before being fired for disorderly conduct on Oct. 12, 2015. Sarkisian revealed at that time that he was battling alcoholism, and he spent time on his treatment.

Sark has worked his way back up the coaching ranks, and is proven to be one of the best offensive minds in all of college football. He took over as Alabama OC in 2016, after Lane Kiffin left to become the head coach at FAU. Sarkisian was the OC for the Atlanta Falcons in 2017, taking over for Kyle Shanahan, but only lasted for a year. After the brief stint in Alabama, Nick Saban was quick to give Sark the keys to Alabama’s offense right back, and he has not disappointed. Over the last two years, Sarkisian’s Alabama offense has ranked #2 and #1 respectively, and he has built an absolute juggernaut this season.

We’ll see if Steve Sarkisian will end up being the right guy to get Texas football over the hump.
