Milwaukee Brewers Reportedly Looking To Move Josh Hader

MLB All-star reliever Josh Hader may be on the move, if we can believe MLB trade rumors. The Milwaukee Brewers have set their list of objectives for the offseason and they are reportedly willing to part ways with their stud reliever if that means bringing in some offensive firepower. High profile teams like the Yankees and Mets could be in play as the Brewers mull their options.

Here’s what MLB Insider Robert Murray had to say about the chances of a Josh Hader deal via Fansided.

“The Brewers “intend to listen” to offers for All-Star reliever Josh Hader, according to sources. Naturally, the Brewers will want a lucrative return for a player they consider the best left-handed reliever in baseball. Hader, 27, ranks in the top two percent in baseball in strikeout rate (39.7 percent) in the top four percent in hard hit rate (26.5 percent). While his fastball velocity has dropped (95.5 mph in 2019; 94.5 mph in 2020), he was dominant for most of the season except for two outings against the Cubs and Pirates that accounted for six of his eight runs allowed,” Murray wrote.

He added that it would make sense for the Brewers to trade Josh Hader from a financial standpoint. Hader is up for arbitration every year from now until 2024. This could be the best opportunity for the Brewers to get the most return out of a Hader trade before his stuff declines, and his price goes up.

Potential Suitors For Josh Hader

It’s hard to really pinpoint a market for Josh Hader. That is, because of how valuable he is. Hader is probably the best relief pitcher in the game of baseball entering the 2021 season. You can never have too much relief pitching. With that being the approach teams take to bullpen arms in recent years, this will probably come down to which team can afford the flame throwing lefty’s contractual upside.

The COVID season meant that every team lost profit in 2020. Most teams will likely look to cut cost this offseason, and not add a big name like Josh Hader to their payroll. So let’s think about which teams could still be looking to make a splash.

We’re certain to see a few MLB trade rumors around both New York teams, either the Mets or Yankees would make sense for Hader. Steve Cohen just bought the Mets and has been clear with his intention to spend money to build a winner. The Yankees might make more sense for Hader, though. It’s no secret that the back end of their bullpen struggled mightily last season. Hader would fix their Achilles heel, and turn them into a World Series front-runner. The only problem with that is the Yankees might prefer a righty. They already have Aroldis Chapman and Zach Britton throwing from the left side in their bullpen.

I could also see a team like the Angels or Padres making a run at Josh Hader’s services. Both teams need bullpen help to turn them into a real contender, and they play in big markets that might be more conducive to taking on Hader’s salary. The two California teams are also among the few who can rival the Mets or even the Yankees in spending.

If Josh Hader does get traded, he would be an enormous get for whatever team he lands on. As a Cubs fan, it would be great to see him leave the NL Central.
