Matthew Stafford Speaks On Relationship With Matt Patricia

After 12 seasons with the Detroit Lions, Matthew Stafford got out.

The veteran quarterback was sick of wasting his talents on a mediocre team that didn’t have a chance to win a Super Bowl. A big reason why the Lions were never able to get over the hump was Matt Patricia, who went a dismal 13-29-1 over his three year tenure as head coach. After being granted his trade request, Stafford is now the quarterback of the L.A. Rams, who figure to be a contender next season.

Patricia was let go as Lions head coach, and has landed back in New England with his old pal Bill Belichick. It was reported that when Stafford first requested a trade he had just one ask –– anywhere but New England. This led to speculation that Stafford wanted no part of Patricia.

Matthew Stafford was asked about his relationship with the prickly Matt Patricia, and he opted to take the high road.

“He and I had a good relationship, no matter what anybody wants to say,” Stafford said to Mitch Albom of the Detroit Free Press. “I could go into his office and talk to him, he could get me on the phone whenever he needed to, but I think we both grew in that relationship. I have a lot of respect for him and who he is, as a football coach and an unbelievable mind.”

Matthew Stafford continues to be a class act. Patricia, on the other hand, will have to go a long way to change his reputation in order to be given another shot at being a head coach in the NFL.
