Tyronn Lue Will Replace Doc Rivers As Clippers Head Coach

Tyronn Lue will remain on the Clippers bench, but he’s getting an upgrade. ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski broke the news this afternoon of Lue’s new deal to be the next head coach of the Los Angeles Clippers.

Good for Tyronn Lue. He was rumored to be a serious candidate for the head coaching vacancy in Houston, but he’ll stay put. I think this is the right move for all parties. For Lue, he gets to stay where he is, and he’ll already have a team in place that should be a top contender next season. For the Clippers, they get familiarity and stability with Lue.

Tyronn Lue may not be the most popular hire, but it’s the right move for an organization that doesn’t need much change to win a championship. He also gets to work with a new staff.

Shams is reporting that former Pistons great Chauncey Billups will be an assistant on Lue’s bench. I wouldn’t be surprised if Chauncey gets a shot to be a head coach sometime in the near future. The basketball IQ and leadership are there.

I’m sure Kawhi Leonard was involved with this decision. He’s already had time to work alongside Lue, and I’m sure that relationship was key here. Time will tell if Tyronn Lue can be the guy to get the Clippers over the hump, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see him win a second ring, this time in L.A.
