Marquese Chriss Welcomes Kelly Oubre Jr., Trashes Suns in the Process

Former Phoenix Sun Marquese Chriss spoke to the media about his teammate Kelly Oubre Jr. joining him on the Golden State Warriors. Chriss had some choice words to describe his teammate’s departure from the Phoenix Suns in a trade during the NBA offseason.

“I think it’s good for him not to have to be over there no more,” Chriss said. “The way they handle things is kind of wild. I feel for him with the situation he was in because that’s kind of how I got traded out of Phoenix. I’m thankful that he’s here and with an organization that truly wants him and wants him to be the best player that he can be and I’m glad to have him as a teammate.”

Marquese Chriss spent two of his four NBA seasons in Phoenix after the Suns selected him 8th overall in the 2016 NBA Draft. He logged 124 starts but never got his career off the ground after myriad changes in coaching, front office and personnel. Chriss set career highs in points, rebounds, assists, blocks, field goal percentage and free throw percentage in his lone year in Golden State. His 19.5 PER last season dwarfed his previous career high, 12.3 his rookie year.

Oubre Jr. was traded to the Phoenix Suns after three and a half seasons in Washington. While he had a career year in the desert, Oubre Jr. wasn’t fond of everything that happened.

“I can play for an owner — somebody who actually cares about the organization and not just the perception of the organization on the media end of it,” said Kelly Oubre Jr. in an interview on 95.7 The Game. “It’s all about the foundation for me, man. You have a beautiful foundation, can build a beautiful [future].”

In terms of the monolithic gap between franchises, the Phoenix Suns have failed to make the playoffs over the last 10 seasons – despite an undefeated NBA bubble run – and have never won the NBA championship. Meanwhile, the Warriors are fresh off of five straight Western Conference championships and three titles. Kelly Oubre Jr. looks to bring the Golden State Warriors back to the playoffs alongside a healthy Steph Curry, Andrew Wiggins, Draymond Green and newly drafted James Wiseman. Not to mention Marquese Chriss.
