Carson Wentz Headed for Indianapolis Colts in 2021?

Fifth-year quarterback Carson Wentz was benched in favor of rookie Jalen Hurts ahead of the Philadelphia Eagles Week 14 game. Now the Wentz era in Philadelphia is in jeopardy in a move that could have wide ranging ramifications across the NFL. Rumors are swirling about Wentz joining his former coordinator, Frank Reich, with the Indianapolis Colts.

Former pro quarterback and current NFL analyst David Carr chimed in with his thoughts.

“With Rivers and Brissett (whom the Colts have made clear they’ve already moved on from) set to hit the free agency market in March, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Frank Reich reunite with Carson Wentz,” Carr wrote in his column. “There is A LOT to figure out contract-wise for the Eagles (and Colts) if Wentz is to relocate, but I believe Reich could revive Wentz’s career and Wentz, in turn, could help take Indy back to its glory days.”

Under Reich, Wentz was an MVP candidate in 2017; posting 33 touchdown passes and a passer rating over 100 during his 11-2 start to the season before missing the rest of the campaign with an ACL injury in his left knee. The Eagles went on to win a championship with Nick Foles under center that very season.

Now, in 2020, Wentz’s stats are among the bottom-dwellers of quarterbacks. He is second to last in completion percentage (57.4%), third to last in yards per attempt (6.0) and third to last in passer rating (72.8). The categories he leads in are interceptions (15), turnover-worthy plays and sacks taken.

Reich and Carson Wentz reuniting makes sense for both camps. The Indianapolis Colts have Philip Rivers on the books for just this year on a one-year, $25 million deal. The team boasts a top-five defense and one of the best offensive lines in the league, two things Wentz must be salivating over. Wentz leads the NFL in sacks by double digits with 50 on the year.

Wentz meanwhile, must gauge whether or not leaving the Philadelphia Eagles will be the best move for his future. A report from Jay Glazer last week claimed his confidence was shaken when the franchise drafted Jalen Hurts in the second round. Hurts and the Eagles will continue to face the same challenges that have plagued Carson Wentz.

Get in Some Sideaction:

If this potential switch was to move forward, the financial side is the trickiest. Philadelphia let Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles walk in free agency as the front office signed Carson Wentz to a four year, $128 million contract.

The Indianapolis Colts have 42 percent of their salary cap open in 2021, leaving the potential of a trade for a massive quarterback contract. The Philadelphia Eagles will face a hit of $28 million, but that’s $6 million less than if Wentz stays. If the quarterback stays just to ride the bench, that’s a lot of money for an NFL team to choose not to utilize.

Philadelphia can also avoid a $15 million guarantee in 2022 if he’s no longer on the roster. Jalen Hurts and the Eagles take on the NFC-best New Orleans Saints December 13.
