Newly acquired Eagles wide receiver Marquise Goodwin has officially opted out of the 2020 NFL season. Goodwin is a father and family man and is ultimately choosing his family over his love for the game of football. The Eagles receiver has taken a fair amount of backlash from his decision. However, Goodwin took to Twitter to explain that he isn’t phased by those who don’t commend him for choosing his family.

I’ve gotten so many messages and @‘s from “concerned” fans telling me how stupid I am and that this COVID-19 isn’t that serious… I bet my bank account that there are 150k dead people that would argue different. #CarryOn

Numbers never lie. If you still aren’t taking COVID seriously at this point, you aren’t just being selfish, you’re being reckless. The new Eagles receiver appeared on ESPN’s First Take to discuss what went into his decision to opt out.
I’m not a fan of any of the teams Goodwin has played on (Bills, 49ers, and now Eagles), so I don’t know much about his personality. Although, it has become very clear to me that this kid is wise beyond his years. Goodwin alluded to the losses of past children and detailed how much being a parent now means to him. His message was so powerful that ESPN’s Molly Querim was moved to tears. Ultimately, one season is not worth putting his family’s lives at risk. No amount of money can take the place of being a father. It’s a gift that knows no monetary value.
I think we’ve learned from Manfred and the MLB that the coronavirus is not something you can just put in the backseat when it comes to sports. The coronavirus is a reality. As much as I love football, I’m pretty skeptical about the idea of it being played during the pandemic. The SEC and several other collegiate athletic organizations are really pushing for a season, but I just don’t see it. Especially at the college level. Regardless, Goodwin has paved the way for other Eagles and players around the NFL to think about what they really value before agreeing to play this season.
