A lot of rumors have been circulating about who the San Francisco 49ers quarterback will be next season, and many think that the team will move on from Jimmy Garoppolo as their long term guy. The 49ers recently snagged Josh Rosen from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers practice squad, and they could be well positioned to take a quarterback in the NFL Draft. Despite the speculation, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan says that Jimmy G is his guy.

“Yes, I do believe Jimmy is going to be our quarterback next year,” Shanahan said via Pro Football Talk.
However, when Shanahan was pressed on whether he’s committed to Garoppolo with ‘100 percent certainty’, he dodged the question.
“You can’t say anything with certainty,” Shanahan said. “You don’t sit here and make promises on anything. When you build a football team, it’s your job to put the best team together year in and year out. People talk about Jimmy’s salary. Jimmy is like one of the middle quarterbacks in the league right now in terms of salary. That’s just how much they cost. So it’s not like it’s something ridiculous or anything like that, so we can work all that out. And, not to mention, look at Jimmy’s record when he’s been here. Jimmy you can win with. He’s proven that. He’s proven he’s a starting quarterback in this league. We had a couple of other guys who got opportunities this year who played like they have a chance at times to be starting quarterbacks, but they did play like backups overall. C.J. [Beathard] played like he has ability to be a starting quarterback two nights ago. He also did that in 2017 in a few games that we had with him. I remember him playing like that versus San Diego.”
It seems like there is a lot of noise surrounding Jimmy Garoppolo, but no real substance. My best guess is that the 49ers will move on from him if they’re given the right opportunity, but it might not be so easy to find an upgrade.
This situation reminds me a lot of Josh Rosen’s days with the Arizona Cardinals. When Kliff Kingsbury first came in, he said Rosen was his guy, but he always had intentions of drafting Kyler Murray if he could. The 49ers might not have the luxury of picking up a top-tier talent like Murray in the draft, so they could still give Garoppolo another shot.
It could be worse for the San Francisco 49ers and Kyle Shanahan, Jimmy Garoppolo did take the team to the Super Bowl last season. He just isn’t a guy who’s going to win games on his own.
