Browns Reportedly Considering Upgrading From Baker Mayfield

Have we seen the end of Baker Mayfield in a Cleveland Browns uniform?

After an injury-riddled 2021-22 season resulted in some bad stats for the young signal caller, it’s being reported that the Browns may look at other options in the offseason.

In a new mailbag column, Mary Kay Cabot of cleveland.com shed some light on how the Browns might view their quarterback situation next year. According to the report, the beat writer said she’d expects the Browns to look into bringing in a “few veteran options” to compete with Baker Mayfield.

Per the article:

“I think the Browns will focus primarily on the passing game on both sides of the ball. I think they’ll inquire about a few veteran quarterbacks to see if an upgrade makes sense. If nothing does, they’ll support Baker Mayfield in every way possible. They’ll supply him with better receivers and some good tackle depth. They’ll also likely tailor the scheme more to his strengths and throw more to the receivers. They’ll also continue to scout the college QBs and possibly draft a developmental prospect.”

The Cleveland Brown currently don’t have much of a starting quarterback option on their roster other than Baker Mayfield. And they would be hard-pressed to enter the market for the likes of Aaron Rodgers or Russell Wilson (or another long shot).

As it stands, I think the Browns will stick with Mayfield — and point to the shoulder injury as the bulk of the reason why he took such a drastic dip last season.

However, if next season proves to be more of the same for Baker Mayfield, this will be his last year in Cleveland.
