Adam Silver Hints At NBA Expansion Team In The Future

NBA commissioner Adam Silver has his hands full as he prepares to navigate another NBA season where the COVID-19 pandemic will have be planned around. However, that has not stopped Silver from keeping his eye on some long-term plans as well.

Specifically, Silver is looking into the possibility of creating an NBA expansion team sometime down the road.

I think I’ve always said that it’s sort of the manifest destiny of the league that you expand at some point,” Silver said via ESPN. “I’d say it’s caused us to maybe dust off some of the analyses on the economic and competitive impacts of expansion. We’ve been putting a little bit more time into it than we were pre-pandemic. But certainly not to the point that expansion is on the front burner.”

While Silver would love to build on what the NBA already has, he remains cautious, and even admitted that ‘competitiveness’ could be an issue.

“You know, we’re very appreciative of the markets that have indicated an interest in having an NBA team,” Silver said. “One of the issues for the league office, and this comes up all the time in terms of competitiveness, it’s not a secret that we don’t have 30 competitive teams at any given time right now when you go into the season, measured by likelihood of ability to win a championship.”

I think Silver touches on the biggest problem in the NBA right now, smaller market teams just don’t have the resources to compete for a championship. With that being said, we’ve seen like the Milwaukee Bucks be able to grow their brand to a point where they have more money to spend.

It’ll be interesting to see how Adam Silver approaches the expansion of the NBA in coming years. I, for one, would love to see more teams with a legitimate shot at a title in the league.
