Jimmy Garoppolo Now Being Linked In Deebo Samuel Trade Talks

Would teams seek to acquire both Jimmy Garoppolo and Deebo Samuel from the 49ers prior to next season?

Earlier in the week, it was reported that Samuel had officially requested to be traded away from San Francisco after his contract negotiations with the team hit a stalemate.

Could Jimmy Garoppolo get caught up in a Deebo Samuel Trade?

When the 49ers lost to the LA Rams last postseason, it was widely assumed that it was the last time we’d be seeing Garoppolo in a Niners uniform. After all, the team had just traded up to select Trey Lance to be their QB of the future. And by all indications, it felt like someone would take a chance on Jimmy G being their QB1 next season.

But as the offseason has gone on, the market has dried up for Garoppolo’s services. However, the Deebo Samuel situation could create a unique opportunity for the veteran quarterback.

NFL writer Jarrett Bailey opened posed the question: why don’t the Carolina Panthers try to acquire both Garoppolo and Samuel via trade?

Per Sports Illustrated:

“The Carolina Panthers are a team on the fringe. With a blockbuster move, and the acquisition of a reliable quarterback, the Panthers could easily be a team who takes one of the Wildcard spots in the NFC.

What if the Panthers could pull off a noteworthy trade, as well as get an upgrade under center, in one fell swoop?

Enter the San Francisco 49ers, who find themselves with quite the dilemma. Not only have they yet to trade quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, RB/WR Deebo Samuel has made it clear that he wants to be traded. Could the Panthers be the team who comes in and puts together a package deal to get the former Super Bowl quarterback and the do-it-all weapon?”

Despite being in on Deshaun Watson this offseason, the Panthers still don’t have their true quarterback of the future — with Sam Darnold still penciled in atop their depth chart.

For now, it seems likely they’ll use their sixth overall pick in this month’s draft to select a young QB. But perhaps the chance to acquire both Jimmy Garoppolo and Deebo Samuel would be too good for them to pass up on.

Obviously, Samuel and Garoppolo would reshape their entire offense, and give coach Matt Rhule a new identity for his team that he hasn’t had in years.

However, it seems like the Niners are intent on keeping Deebo Samuel despite his trade request, which would throw a wrench in this entire hypothetical idea.

If you’re the Carolina Panthers, you’d think you have to at least kick the tires on the possibility, though.
