Anthony Rizzo Throws Shade At Cubs During Weekend Series

For the first time since his Cubs days, Anthony Rizzo is facing off against his former team.

As the Yankees face off against the Cubs in the weekend series in the Bronx, Cubs fans everywhere have cringed at seeing Rizzo wear another team’s pinstripes on a competitive team.

And of course, Anthony Rizzo hit a home run against his former team on Saturday.

Anthony Rizzo has thrown some subtle shade at the Cubs’ efforts to extend him in the past. And when asked about the Cubs not being a competitive team, Rizzo made sure to say some more things about the organization.

Specifically, Rizzo believes the Cubs should never field a bad roster considering the big market they play in.

“All the big markets have plenty of money to spend, so, yeah, a team like the Cubs should be competing every single year,” Rizzo said to NBC Chicago.

When pressed on the matter, Anthony Rizzo talked about how the game of baseball is better when big market teams are competing.

“Yeah. It’s better for the game. When the big teams are playing at a premium, it’s just better for baseball. It’s better for the overall experience when you turn on the game and it’s the Yankees-Red Sox, and we’re battling for first place in June but it seems like it’s October. That’s good for baseball.”

Still, Anthony Rizzo landed in a great opportunity with a team that looks like a clear front-runner to win the World Series this season.

“At the deadline [last year], when they made their moves, it was clear to see the direction that they wanted to go in, temporarily,” said Rizzo. “And coming here was an amazing opportunity [for me], to come to a team that was contending.

“The atmosphere and culture here is amazing. I think signing back and creating what I feel is an even better atmosphere in this clubhouse and this culture with such a rich history is special. Us being in first place definitely helps, but I think just all the little things that go into it has been a lot of fun this year.”
