Rams Reportedly Will Have ‘Open QB Competition’ Between Jared Goff And John Wolford

Jared Goff has a winning record as Los Angeles Rams quarterback, has a huge contract, and has made it to a Super Bowl. So what’s the problem? It sure seems like the Rams simply don’t think he’s the right guy for Sean McVay’s offense. So much so, that they’ve willing to have an open competition between Goff and undrafted QB John Wolford.

According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, Wolford and Goff will duel it out in the event that Jared Goff isn’t traded in the offseason.

Rams general manager Les Snead didn’t exactly give a ringing endorsement when he was asked whether the organization was moving forward with Goff as their quarterback.

“Not going to get into specifics on those,” Snead said when asked if Goff would be the Rams’ quarterback in 2021, via the Associated Press’ Greg Beacham. “What I can say is Jared Goff is a Ram in this moment and I said it’s way too early to speculate. The future, that’s a beautiful mystery.”

I kind of understand the Rams leaving the possibility open that Jared Goff won’t be their long term answer. That makes sense. What doesn’t make sense is moving forward with John Wolford as the guy. Wolford has bounced around the NFL before landing as Goff’s backup. He had a losing record at Wake Forest, and really didn’t look so promising in relief of Goff at the end of last season. Putting John Wolford up against Russell Wilson and Kyler Murray in the NFC West would be a recipe for disaster.

What did Jared Goff do to piss off the L.A. Rams?
