Alex Smith has seized the starting job at quarterback for The Washington Football Team. Since taking the role, Alex Smith has led Washington to a first-place tie for the NFC East at 4-7. Washington has liked what they have seen from Smith so far, however, their former GM isn’t buying in on him as the long-term answer at quarterback. Former GM Charley Casserly had a thing or two to say about Alex Smith and his future as the quarterback of the WFT.

“I don’t think you can sit there and say, ‘We’re totally comfortable,’” Casserly told The Sports Junkies on 106.7 the Fan on Monday morning. “The long-term answer is not here, and it’s fools gold. I don’t think they’re buying it, what’s happening right now, long term.”
Alex Smith has played pretty well in his few starts, there are a couple of things that keep him from seeming like a promising option long-term. First of all, he is already 36-years-old but, more importantly, he is returning from one of the most devastating injuries the NFL has ever seen. Former GM Charley Casserly still believes that Washington should be aiming for a playoff berth, but feels that alone shouldn’t be enough to make Alex Smith the starter in 2021.
“If they make the playoffs, that’s great,” Casserly said. “You taught the guys how to win, you have a lot of young players that are playing well right now, that’s good. It’s important for them to learn how to win and win close games, but you still need to solve the quarterback long-term.”
Winning the NFC East wouldn’t be all that high of an accomplishment for Alex Smith. However, was Smith to win a playoff game that would be a different story. At least one thing is for certain. Someone will have to make a decision at quarterback for the WFT. It just won’t be Charley Casserly.
