Thom Brennaman Says Fans Want Him Back In The Booth Despite The Homophobic Slur Heard Round the World

Thom Brennaman has been mocked tirelessly since he was fired by Fox Sports following a homophobic slur during a Reds game.

But according the Brennaman, the people are still calling for him to make a return to the broadcast booth.

“If I’m in the grocery or getting a cup of coffee at the local convenient shop, 99% of those I bump into, I’ll hear, ‘We wish you were back, we miss you!’” Brennaman told Sports Broadcast Journal. “Let’s say it’s even 90%. Are execs going to make a decision to appease the 10%? Wouldn’t you listen to the massive 90%?”

The 58-year-old Thom Brennaman was caught on a hot mic referring to some city as “one of the f-g capitols of the world”.

He then proceeded to make the lengthy apology while Nick Castellanos was hitting a home run in the background, a scene that still gets referred to a year later.

Brennaman would also reveal during his recent interview that he was talking about San Francisco when making the comment that would end his run as the Reds’ play-by-play man.

“On the TV pre-game show, when I wasn’t aware that we on the air but when my mic was hot, I made a homophobic remark. Although it wasn’t on-air, the clip made its way to the internet and went viral from there. There’s no defending the word I used in any form or fashion. I’ve owned up to it every second since,” Brennaman told Halberstam. “The moment it left my lips, I knew it was over. It was just a matter of time. I anticipated a suspension and lots of backlash.”

Thom Brennaman said he was getting support from fellow broadcaster Bob Costas – who recommended him for the Cubs play-by-play opening in the Winter.

Despite his pleas, it likely that Thom Brennaman has called his last MLB baseball game.
