The Jets Released Quincy Enunwa And His Contract May Now Be One Of The Weirdest (And Most Jets-Like) In NFL History

A couple of years ago, the Jets agreed to an extension for on-the-rise slot receiver Quincy Enunwa reportedly worth up to $36 million. The Quincy Enunwa contract also had just over $20 million guaranteed, a big number since Enunwa sustained a preseason neck injury the season before.

Today, the Jets released Quincy Enunwa after he sustained another serious neck injury during the first quarter of the 2019 season. Here’s the production they got during that contract:

You read that correctly: Quincy Enunwa contributed negative yards to the team while he earned just over $20 million in the process. It’s definitiely a downer that neck injuries hit him in two out of three seasons. But it’s certainly a situation that feels very native to the Jets, that they could somehow spend tens of millions of dollars to get less yardage than an incompletion or even taking a knee. There’s some likely poetry in that situatiion, that one of the Jets’ highest paid players would be the one who contributes negative yardage.

Hopefully Enunwa can get his career back on track elsewhere following those neck injuries. If he does, at likely far less guaranteed money, it’ll be a great moment for sports and another classic turn for the life of being a Jets supporter.
