Russell Wilson Making Pump-Up Videos For D.K. Metcalf Is Why He’s Got To Be A Top NFL QB To Play For

There’s a lot of reasons to like Russell Wilson. He’s won a Super Bowl. He’s superhumanly accurate in a way that makes you want to kill the Seahawks’ offensive coordinators for not throwing more. He’s married to Ciara and can often be unintentionally hilarious with his goody-two-shoes nature.

But Russell Wilson posting what’s basically an And-One mixtape for his second-year teammate D.K. Metcalf is what really goes a level beyond. He even set it to relevant music like he’s an overachieving high school video coordinator who thinks that if he gets the team’s star a bunch of views on Hudl that he’ll also get called up to the major leagues.

There have been a lot of analogies for quarterbacks. Currently maligned podcaster Bill Simmons has previously compared it to an alpha male, in terms of being the guy who’d drive a car amidst a group of friends. Guys like Tom Brady or Peyton Manning have looked like perfectionists running an orchestra at times. And, of course, we all have a soft spot for the ubiquitous “gunslinger” analogy that’s applied from everyone from Brett Favre to Jameis Winston.

I think it’s more nuanced than that. You want a leader, a guy whom teammates can rally around. But there’s also a bit of CEO and even first grade teacher whom a kid would call “mommy” to the role. You need to distribute touches accordingly, believe in guys when they’re playing poorly. A quarterback has to demand greatness out of teammates but also coddle them and nurture their egos in that process. You need to hype your guys up and give them the confidence to do exactly what you need out of them at any given time like a piece on a chess board.

And if my superstar quarterback is throwing me pinpont bombs AND showing off how great I am to in music video form to his 5 million followers? That’s about as ride-or-die as a QB can get. If I’m D.K. Metcalf, I’m going the extra mile for Russ after this. If I’m Tyler Lockett, I’m working even harder to make sure that he gives me an even better mixtape with even better music.

Russ is playing chess while a lot of the other NFL QBs are playing tiddlywinks. Just don’t expect him to put a Future song on one of his wide receiver highlight videos.
