Ron Rivera Admits Decision Making Problems; Accidentally Does Right Thing Cutting Guice

As an NFL coach, you don’t earn the nickname “Riverboat Ron” by always making the right decision. Ron Rivera, the coach of Washington D.C.’s Washington Football Team – a name he is at least partially responsible for after multiple weeks of brainstorming sessions with ownership – admitted to the media on Monday morning that he has significant issues with judgement and decision making.

In a stunning press conference that was called to discuss the reasons why the team cut promising running back Derrius Guice over the weekend.  Rivera confessed to the media that cutting the running back was a “very difficult decision.” For a coach known for his snap judgment and quick decision making – like the time he famously decided to call a timeout so he would have time to think about challenging a call because he didn’t want to risk losing a timeout – confessing to not being sure about this one is quite shocking.

After all, there’s a lot of on-field potential to weigh against the fact that Guice was arrested on Friday on charges of domestic violence, destruction of property and felony strangulation, from three separate incidents earlier in the year. After an investigation into the incidents that allegedly happened on February 14tth, March 3rd and April 17th at Guice’s Virginia home that were reported in late July, police officially charged and released the running back before the weekend.

The team did act with surprising speed – particularly in light of Rivera’s admission that it was a difficult decision – releasing Guice late on Friday night. After all, they aren’t exactly the good guys of the NFL and the team is currently still employing Reuben Foster and Cody Lattimer who both have domestic violence issues on their records. Foster’s Wikipedia page reads more like a wanted poster than a football player’s bio. Rivera would tell the media that he views the situations differently.

“When we decide to do something, when we think of what we’re going to do, we have to honestly think: Is what I’m about to do truly going to help us?” Is it going to benefit us, and how is it going to benefit us?” Rivera explained to the media on Monday, as if they were scratching their heads about the benefits of getting a potentially violent individual out of the locker room.

“If it was the right decision, we will benefit from it and if it’s not, it will be on me. I will take full responsibility as we go forward to try and make sure we do things the right way and we’ll go from there,” Rivera continued. Coach, I’m speaking to you directly here, it was the right decision. What wasn’t the right decision was to admit that it was a tough decision.

This is one of those calls that’s supposed to be a no-brainer. Having to wrestle with it at all, even after supposedly committing to becoming a culture-first organization, is telling about the organization, the coach and the overall decision making process involved with every aspect of this franchise. Despite his injury plagued 2019, Guice is undeniably talented with upside to spare, but even the Redsk Washington Football Team has to draw a line somewhere. At least as of the last couple months, anyway.

For anyone still in doubt, the process should basically be three simple steps: 1) Confirm allegations 2) Contact General Manager and Player’s Agent to cut player 3) Let media know player has been cut in an easily made decision that is definitely the right move for the franchise. At least they accidentally got part of it right.

For those yelling at their monitors or phones right now, yes Guice is entitled to due process under the law and will see his day in court, but that in no way applies to his employment. The team is well within their rights to sever ties based on the allegations alone. Also, Guice turned himself in to authorities to face the charges and he has since deleted all of his social media accounts, which isn’t exactly screaming “Attica! Attica!”

The Washington Football Team is down a running back but maybe things have gone up a notch as far as their karma and general goodwill goes. They’re going to need all the help they can get with decision makers like Ron Rivera at the helm.
