NHL Diversity Alliance Joined By Patrick Mahomes And Several Other Big Sports Icons In Fight To End Racism In Hockey

The Hockey Diversity Alliance was recently formed by Akim Aliu and Evander Kane. Its main goal is to restructure the culture of a sport checkered with a history of racism. Several NFL players, including Patrick Mahomes, George Kittle, and Marshawn Lynch have teamed up with Kane and the NHL to help change hockey culture. The NFL stars, along with Brooks Koepka, Danny Green, and many others were featured in a powerful video, showing their support for the HDA. They promised to stand behind Aliu and Kane in the fight for equality.

It’s a beautiful thing to see athletes that are black, white, male, and female stand together in the fight against racism. Evander Kane is a prime example of how the NHL has created a culture that is not kind to people who look like him. I’m sure many of you remember the tracksuit and the money phone incidents. It’s time for the culture to change. Kane and Aliu worked hard to form the HDA and have vowed to continue the fight to change the NHL and hockey culture.

Aliu, Kane, and the HDA say that in the six weeks since they formed the organization they’ve had an ongoing dialogue with some of hockey’s biggest organizations, including the NHL. Having athletes like Mahomes behind the HDA makes the movement all the more powerful.

“Having athletes of that stature and that caliber believe in our message will further broaden our reach to make the necessary changes we need, in not just hockey, but society as a whole,” said Aliu.

Aliu is exactly right. It’s not just hockey. This fight is much larger than sports. However, the HDA and the push that professional athletes are making helps channel the voices of the unheard. Do your part to fight the fight. Vote. Have uncomfortable conversations. And, above all, love one another. No matter what color.
