Jerry Jones Suddenly Leaves Door Open To Firing Mike McCarthy Despite Previous Reports

Could Jerry Jones decide to move on from Mike McCarthy, after all?

On Friday, Jones was talking to The Athletic about the disappointing end to the season. And when asked about the current coaching staff, Jones was anything but committal.

“Let me be real clear, one of the pet peeves I have is that I don’t like this, ‘Well we’ve got to work on this in the offseason, we’ve got to work on this.’ I don’t go for that,” Jones said. “I want those things recognized and addressed after we play Tampa (in Week 1) after the first game, or after we play the sixth game. I don’t want to wait until we’re sitting here with no season left to address these things we’re doing or not doing. All of that is in the mix here and a part of what I do. That’s the way I do it, as you know, the ultimate decision in these coaches is the one that I have to make.”

Earlier in the week, Cowboys executive Vice President, (and Jerry Jones’ son) Stephen Jones, said he was “very confident” Mike McCarthy would return in 2022.

“Absolutely,” he said when asked if he expected McCarthy to coach the Cowboys in 2022. “Very confident.”

So far, seven other NFL teams are looking for a head coach during this cycle. And it will likely be eight once the Raiders decide to move on from interim head coach, Rich Bisaccia. So Jerry Jones is going to have to make up his mind real quick before he misses out on top candidates.

I’d put my money on Mike McCarthy returning next season, albeit on a short leash.
