Drew Lock Had To Miss Time For Cheating COVID Protocols With Fellow QBs

There might be a little something else in the Denver Broncos’ decision to start Teddy Bridgewater over the young Drew Lock.

According to a report, Lock and the other Broncos quarterbacks were forced to miss time last season due to contract tracing after they were caught cheating the league’s COVID rules.

Most people will remember the joke that was the game where the Broncos were forced to start practice squad receiver Kendall Hinton at quarterback because Lock, Brett Rypien, Jeff Driskel, and practice squad QB Blake Bortles were found to be close contacts when Driskel tested positive for COVID.

But what you didn’t know was that Drew Lock and the others were forced home because they tried to cheat a system put in place to avoid close contacts.

Per USA Today:

“The Times reported that the players removed their contact tracing devices and put them in the four corners of the quarterback meeting room, but then sat together to watch film. The trackers, therefore, logged data that showed they were observing social distancing requirements when they were not.

Because they were deemed to be close contacts, they then were ineligible to play that week.”

In Drew Lock and everyone else’s absence, poor Kendall Hinton looked lost, and the Broncos ended up losing to the Saints 31-3.

“In a controlled and socially distanced area, we let our masking slip for a limited amount of time,” Drew Lock wrote last November. “An honest mistake, but one I will own. I sincerely apologize and I fully understand why these safety precautions are so important. Doing the right thing for a majority of the time is not good enough.”

Broncos GM John Elway tried to postpone the Saints game until one of his actual quarterbacks was free from isolation, but to no avail.

After Bridgewater was named Denver’s QB1, Drew Lock showed disappointment. But he also said he was fully prepared to embrace the backup role and do whatever it takes to help the team win.
