Dick Vitale Posts Update On Cancer Ahead Of “March Madness”

This college basketball season simply has not slapped the same without longtime broadcaster Dick Vitale involved.

The boisterous voice of NCAA basketball announced prior to the season that he was in treatment for cancer. And with March Madness right around the corner, Dicky V posted an update on where he’s at medically.

“My MARCH MADNESS starts TUES.8 AM as I report for bloodwork & a PET SCAN that will give my Dr. Rick Brown an analysis of my cancer & see if the chemo treatments have been successful,” Vitale said on Twitter. “[Prayers] for good news. Just a way of life for ALL cancer patients!”

Dick Vitale had a surgery done in February to “a severe form of Dysplasia, Carcinoma in Situ” on his vocal cords. And while he hasn’t called games this season, he hasn’t yet closed the door on a return.

Last weekend, Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski sent Vitale a gift during his recovery, saying he missed the broadcaster’s presence at his last home game. Coach K sent a couple signed pictures of the two together over the years

“I was so touched by the beautiful message I got from Coach K on the day of the game,” Vitale said. “It just shows you what a caring guy he is. It was filled with thoughts how he knows that I will be there in spirit. I so appreciate on game day that he thought of me.”

We’re all praying for Dick Vitale, and we’ll keep a look out for any further news from the scans this week.
