Former quarterback Brett Favre has found himself in some trouble.
On Tuesday morning, the Mississippi State Auditor ordered Favre to pay back $828,000 he received from welfare funds that were supposed to go to families in need.
The Hall-of-Famer allegedly accepted money from the organization, Families First For Mississippi, for speaking engagements that he never attended.
According to the report, Brett Favre took $1.1 Million from two non-profits in “illegally spent welfare funds” . The statement also called out Favre for knowing he was accepting funds that were made in part of the embezzlement scheme.
State Auditor Shad White said that, after Brett Favre accepted $1.1 million in "illegally spent welfare funds" for speaking engagements, he never followed through on the speaking engagements.
Favre said he didn't know the money was illegally obtained.https://t.co/6ExmQXg2cY

“Months after news of the scandal first broke last year, the auditor announced in May 2020 that Brett Favre had returned a portion of the funds. White said he believed at the time that Favre was acting in “good faith” and that he had “seen no records indicating Mr. Favre knew that (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) was the program that served as the source of the money he was paid.”
In a statement today, however, White said the recipients of the misspent TANF funds, including Favre and Favre Enterprises, must repay the money within 30 days or face a civil lawsuit. This afternoon, Mississippi Today’s Anna Wolfe reported that the letter Favre received from White said the “illegal expenditures and unlawful dispositions were made when you knew or had reason to know through the exercise of reasonable diligence that the expenditures were illegal and/or the dispositions were unlawful.” Wolfe was the first to report on Favre’s involvement in early 2020.”
While Brett Favre is being asked to return a good portion of the money he was paid for speaking events that he never actually did, he’s not currently one of six individuals being indicted by the state.
Still, this is a truly gross look for the legendary quarterback.
