Anthony Rizzo Thinks The Cubs Can Keep Their Core Together: ‘They Absolutely Can’

Anthony Rizzo and the Chicago Cubs have been turning some heads in 2021.

Coming into the season, the 2016 World Series champions were not viewed as much of a threat around the league. In fact, many saw the club looking to sell star players Rizzo, Javier Baez, and Kris Bryant at the trade deadline being as all three of their contracts set to expire at the end of the year.

Not only do the Cubs not appear to be sellers this season, but they could even position themselves to be buyers if the team continues at their current pace throughout the Summer.

While many believe this season will be the last time we see Anthony Rizzo, Javier Baez, and Kris Bryant all playing together, Rizzo thinks the team and its ownership is more than capable of keeping the band together.

“If they want to, absolutely they can,” Anthony Rizzo said Friday afternoon during a pregame interview in the box seats at Oracle Park via The Chicago Tribune. “The game is thriving with all the TV deals, the revenue (streams). If that’s their out and it’s time to go, so be it.

“I just think it’s so out of our control. I know this question is going to be asked now, and at the All-Star break, and at the trade deadline and into September and October. But it’s really out of our control. Just do what’s best for yourself, what’s best for the next guy coming up, for the game and for your own mindset.”

On the year, Cubs Swiss Army knife Kris Bryant has played all over the field while putting up MVP-type numbers at the dish. Javier Baez and Anthony Rizzo have also showcased themselves ahead of their respective free agencies.

So far, the Chicago Cubs have not ruled out any extensions. But you would think that the club would have already locked up all three guys if that was the direction they wanted to go.

Anthony Rizzo has made it clear that he would like the front office to continue to build around himself, Baez, and Bryant. Now, it’s up to the brass to make their decision on the Cubs’ “Big 3”.
