Ravens Owner Puts Browns on Blast Over Deshaun Watson Contract

The Browns deal for Deshaun Watson is ruffling some feathers.

Baltimore Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti said Tuesday that Deshaun Watson’s record-setting contract could have ripple effects for quarterback deals going forward, including the one for Lamar Jackson. Watson received the most fully guaranteed money in NFL history, $230 million from the Browns in a trade.

Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti blasted divisional foe Cleveland for handing Deshaun Watson a “groundbreaking” contract.

“It’s like, ‘Damn, I wish they hadn’t guaranteed the whole contract.’ I don’t know that he should’ve been the first guy to get a fully guaranteed contract,” Bisciotti said Tuesday while speaking at the NFL’s annual league meetings.

Now the Ravens are looking to negotiate a contract extension with Jackson, who is entering his fifth-year option.

Bisciotti then added, “But it doesn’t necessarily mean that we have to play that game, you know? We shall see. If I was in bogged-down negotiations with Lamar, then maybe I would have a quicker reaction to that news.”

“To me, (Watson’s contract is) something that is groundbreaking, and it’ll make negotiations harder with others,” said Bisciotti.

Watson may or may not have been the right guy to get that contract, but if not him, someone else would have. The QB market is always going to get richer and richer.

Just part of the business.
