Panthers Reportedly Are Open to Bringing Back Cam Newton Under Two Conditions

Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers may be reuniting again.

It all depends on what Cam is going to accept as he nears the tail end of his career. According to The Charlotte Observer, the Carolina Panthers are open to bringing back their all-time leading passer but there are a few condition. One Cam would have to sign on for a “smaller salary” from 2021, and two, he would not head into training camp as the starter.

Meaning this would be a backup role for the former MVP.

Sam Darnold is currently the Panthers QB1, with P.J. Walker and 2022 third-round draft pick Matt Corral also in the mix.

Panthers GM Scott Fitterer spoke about a possible return for Cam.

“I think we’re still having thoughts,” Fitterer said. “We have to see how this works out here throughout the spring. I just happened to be up at the [Kentucky] Derby last weekend and Cam was up there. We’re texting a little bit. The lines of communication are open. I know Coach Rhule has spoken with him. We are going to have a discussion at some point but we’re just not quite there yet, but we’ll see how it goes. The more competition we have at that position the better.”

Newton played in eight games with five starts for the Carolina Panthers last season. And he didn’t look very good.

His arm is cooked, and he can’t move like he used to. Too much running has run his game straight into the ground.
