The Mitchell Trubisky-Kenny Pickett QB Battle “More For Show”

Is there a legitimate quarterback battle between Mitchell Trubisky and Kenny Pickett in Pittsburgh? According to a recent report, not really.

While Steelers coach Mike Tomlin has yet to name his starting quarterback, The Athletic’s Mark Kaboly recently indicated that it’s Trubisky who’s the clear front-runner to start Week One.

Per the report:

“Even though Mitch Trubisky, Kenny Pickett and Mason Rudolph will be pitted against each other to see who replaces the retired Ben Roethlisberger, Trubisky has a significant head start, and the competition will be more for show than substance. If you are digging deep, you are watching to see if Isaiahh Loudermilk can beat out Chris Wormley and what the pecking order will be with the cornerbacks when it comes to base and sub-packages, but that’s about all.”

Last season, Mitchell Trubisky learned under Josh Allen in Buffalo as the backup following his disastrous stint with the Bears. But now, it appears as though Mitch will have another opportunity to prove he’s a starter in the league.

Steelers OC Matt Canada also indicated it was Mitchell Trubisky’s job to lose right now.

“I think Coach has been very clear that Mitch is No. 1, working with the ones and doing a really good job with that,” Canada said. “Mason is No. 2, and Kenny is No. 3 and we are working that way based on experience, based on résumé. We have been clear that this has been a laid-out plan of how we are going to evolve and who our quarterback is going to be for the 2022 season.

Regardless of who starts for the Steelers Week One, fans will be calling for rookie Kenny Pickett is things start to go south.
