Willson Contreras Receives Standing Ovation In What Could Be His Last Game At Wrigley Field

Willson Contreras will always be beloved by the Cubs fans at Wrigley Field. But perhaps he’s enjoying his last home stand with the team ahead of the Trade Deadline.

In the Cubs’ last home game before the deadline, Contreras was given multiple standing ovations when he came to the plate.

When taking in the atmosphere, Willson Contreras was clearly emotional.

After the game last night, Willson Contreras spoke on the emotional time as he waits to see if he’ll be traded away.

“I wish this day never came,” Contreras said, per the Sun-Times. “But it’s about business. I understand that, I respect that. And I love my team. I love my teammates most, and I don’t want to get too attached with them because you never know what’s going to happen next week, or this week even in San Francisco. It’s been a tough couple of days for me
.

“I’m trying just to appreciate everything that Wrigley Field is, and thinking about all the memories that I have here since 2016, [in the organization] from 2009 till now. It’s probably — I don’t know — but probably my last home stand with the fans this year. It’s tough for me. It’s really tough.”

At this point, Willson Contreras is fully expecting to be traded, given that he has not discussed a contract extension with the Cubs and his deal is expected to expire at the end of the season.

So, this week is serving as a farewell for the Cubs catcher and the fan base that has embraced him for the past seven years.

It sure seems like a mutually emotional time for everyone involved.
