Cleveland Browns Reportedly Make Decision on Baker Mayfield

Baker Mayfield is not going to happy with this latest report.

After acquiring Houston Texans Deshaun Watson in a trade, the Cleveland Browns appear to be moving on from Baker Mayfield. However, Mayfield is still on the roster and it looks like it will remain that way until they find a trade partner. The Browns will not be cutting Mayfield from the roster, according to Cleveland.com.

“The Browns have no plans to cut Mayfield, even if he’s still on the roster at the start of training camp in July, a league source tells cleveland.com.

With Mayfield under contract for a fully-guaranteed $18.86 million, it makes no sense for the Browns to cut him and take the entire hit. They’ll subtract whatever he makes from his next team from that amount, but it wouldn’t make much of a dent”

The Carolina Panthers are the one team that keeps getting brought up.  They have reportedly been involved in trade talks for Mayfield, but they reportedly want Cleveland to pay at least $13 million on the contract if they trade for him.

NFL Network reporter Ian Rapoport explained why the team has still not been able to move Mayfield.

“There were two reasons for that,” Rapoport said. “One was they couldn’t agree on money. They couldn’t agree on how the salary would be split. And when we’ve seen these in the past — which obviously we saw one last year with Teddy Bridgewater — you know, the Panthers were clearly moving on so they had to deal with him. And I think they — I can’t remember the exact number, I thought it was split basically down the middle on his like, you know, 16 or $17 million salary or whatever it was. So, one side took half, the other side took the other half, they give them a late round pick, boom, Bridgewater traded. The problem here is that (Mayfield) has a little more value to the Browns, because they may have to use them, or they may have to pretend they might have to use him, or Deshaun Watson might get suspended and they might really, really have to use him.”

The Browns have no interest in granting Baker’s request, which shows just where their relationship stands at this point.

Baker may want to rethink his attitude on the next team he plays for.
